Top model of the Phoenix series with PRO functions
The AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 7940HS is a chip for mobile devices that was launched on the market in June 2023. As the PRO model of the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS, the top model of the Phoenix series has a pair of management and security features. It corresponds to the Zen 4 architecture and is manufactured using the 4nm process.
Technical data and performance of the AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 7940HS
The technical data and performance features of the AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 7940HS are the same as those of the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS. Like the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS and AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840HS, both mobile CPUs have 8 Zen cores, which can process up to 16 threads thanks to multithreading. In addition, 16MB L3 and 8MB L2 cache are available for fast processing of frequently used data. AMD puts the TDP at 35W, while consumption can rise to up to 54W. The basic clock rate of the CPU is 4GHz, in boost the cores clock up to 5.2GHz. According to the S suffix, the processor cannot be overclocked.
In the Cinebench 2024 single-core benchmark, the CPU can compete with the Intel Core i5-13500H and beat the in-house AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840HS. The AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX performs better here and competes with the Intel Core i7-13620H and is only just behind the Intel Core i7-13500HX and Intel Core i7-13700HX. In the multi-core benchmark, the performance is comparable with AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS and Apple M3 Pro 11-Core. The Intel Core i7-13650HX achieves a significantly better result here, but the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D also scores almost twice as many points. In the Geekbench 6.2 benchmark, the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840HS achieves about as many points in single-core mode as several 13th generation Intel Core i7 CPUs, including the Intel Core i7-13705H and Intel Core i7-13700HX. In multi-core mode, Intel's processors, including the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, have a slight lead. AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX and AMD Ryzen 7 7840S also perform better here.
Integrated graphics card and additional functions
The AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 7940HS uses the AMD Radeon 780M integrated graphics card, which is based on RDNA 3. This has 12 ray tracing computing units and clocks at up to 2.8 GHz. The iGPU also integrates an AV1 video engine and the AI accelerator is said to be faster than the AI engine of the Apple M2. Demanding games should therefore be able to be played at a lower detail level and 720p, while games with less detail should also run smoothly at a medium to high detail level.
One of the security features of AMD's PRO models is the AMD Memory Guard. This memory encryption is designed to provide particularly effective protection against physical attacks on the system. According to AMD, this protection should also have hardly any impact on processor performance. With the management functions, devices can be updated, repaired, restored and upgraded remotely, for example. AMD PRO also currently supports infrastructures and modern EEM solutions.
The AMD Ryzen PRO 9 7940HS is suitable for a wide range of users without far outperforming other CPUs in any one area of application. However, the processor can still be classified in the top segment. The AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS may be a suitable alternative for those not interested in the PRO functions. With its business features, the AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 7940HS is also used in workstations.
