Which Laptop Is Suitable for University?
Due to the variety of study programmes, each student has their own requirements for the device. While some will only work with office applications, others may need a more powerful laptop to use CAD or image and video editing programs. If you already mainly use the internet, a Chromebook might be of interest to you. Your new laptop may also just be a supplement to your tablet for typing longer texts. You should therefore contemplate, what your new laptop should be capable of. Each field has its own minimum technical requirements, which are reflected in different price ranges.
Affordable Laptops for Students
Despite the low price, laptops in this price range differ in various aspects: From small displays with 11.6-inch displays to screen diagonals of 15.6 inches. The majority already rely on a high Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), with fewer pixels resulting in longer battery life. Our budget laptops are well suited for text editing and browsing. SSD hard disks (solid state drives) have become the standard.
Affordable Laptop for Students (Windows):
The operating system schoud be paid particular attention to when buying a laptop. If you are an iPhone user and perhaps even own an iPad, the recommendation of a MacBook is obvious. The devices situated in the Apple universe harmonize perfectly with each other. However, there are also devices that are delivered without an operating system. This pushes the price down a few pounds. You might be able to obtain a Windows license free of charge provided by your university. An alternative would of course be to install a free Linux distribution. Other laptops come with Windows and then there are some with the Google operating system "Chrome OS". If you are specifically looking for Windows Pro, you should take a look at our business laptops.

The lighting conditions in which you will be working with your laptop also play an important role. If you tend to work outdoors, you should consider a matt, anti-glare display to avoid annoying reflections on the screen. For those who prefer to work on a laptop in the library, this question is more a matter of taste. For presentations, it might be useful to be able to connect your device to a projector in the lecture hall or seminar room. Even some the cheapest laptops have an HDMI port for this purpose. If the machine of your choice only supports DisplayPort via USB-C, you will usually need a dongle, although these are now increasingly becoming part of the inventory of educational institutions.
The important question is how much data you need to access on your laptop every day. Not everyone needs a large data storage device. If you already store data on an external hard disk or in the cloud, you can often save money on models with smaller storage disks. With an external SSD, files can also easily be accessed from two different PCs. Even the cheapest laptops have at least one USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 port for this purpose. However, storage is no longer expensive these days, so terabyte hard drives are also available in the affordable category.
2-in-1 Convertibles
The advantages of convertibles for students are obvious: they are laptop and tablet at the same time. The practical 2-in-1 talents with touchscreen are available in two different versions: Firstly, there are devices equipped with keyboard with a 360-degree hinge, which allows the keyboard to be folded completely behind the screen. And then there are the detachables, where you can simply remove the keyboard and hold the touchscreen in your hand as a tablet.
Popular 2-in-1 Convertible:
One of the devices from the Microsoft Surface family is recommended as a detachable. If you prefer one with a 360-degree hinge, other companies such as HP, Lenovo or Acer and others are the right choice. In our 2-in-1 convertible category you can find out more about the most mobile type of computing performance. As the devices are so compact, most of them have one or more USB-C ports that make it easy to connect a projector to the 2-in-1 device using an HDMI or DisplayPort adapter.
Chromebooks
Chromebooks have evolved from a nerd project to a real operating system and full-fledged competitor to Windows and macOS with Google's lightweight interpretation of a Linux OS. The pre-installed Chrome OS consists largely of the browser of the same name. And anyone who takes a closer look at their computer usage and realizes that most of it takes place on websites anyway, should definitely consider the underdog. On the other hand, Chromebooks score with impressive battery life and fast performance, as the system is reduced to the bare essentials.
Popular Chromebook:
Thanks to the Linux kernel shared with Android, it is even possible to install many apps that you already know from your smartphone or tablet via the Play Store. This means you can use a Chromebook for simple video editing tasks or photo processing. With a Chromebook, you also live in the cloud. The fixed connection to almost infinite amounts of data storage comes with another advantage. Collaborative software such as the Google Drive Suite is particularly useful in everyday student life if you want to edit a document or presentation on several devices at the same time.
Ultrabooks for Students
If you attach great importance to a light, thin and particularly handy laptop, you won't be able to avoid an ultrabook. With screen diagonals of 12 to 14 inches, they are perfect for everyday university life and can be quickly stowed away in your bag. Weighing not much more than two pounds, they are hardly noticeable in your daily university cyrryings. Ultrabooks boast a long battery life and comparably high power.
Popular Ultrabook:
One of the first ultrabooks was the MacBook Air from Apple. Many companies followed the trend and offer a wide range of these small all-rounders, whether it's the Zenbooks from ASUS, the Swift series from Acer, the Lenovo Ideapad or Lenovo Yoga, the HP Spectre or the HP Envy. If you are interested, you can find more information in our Ultrabooks category.
Gaming Laptops for Students?
It is not uncommon for a laptop to replace a desktop PC in everyday student life. Accordingly, it needs to be more powerful and equipped for all situations. One major use case is, of course, gaming. A gaming laptop always comes with solid processor performance and RAM, so that image, video editing or CAD programs can also be used for university. A little tip: set up two Windows user accounts from the outset - one for university and one for leisure. This will allow you to concentrate on your studies, but also enjoy your free time.
Popular Gaming Laptop:
Of course, video games are the speciality of the graphics cards that come with gaming laptops. A potential advantage of a gaming device is also its larger screen of 15 to 17 inches with graphics qualities between full HD and 4K resolutions. You can use our configurator to find your own gaming laptop, for example filtering by manufacturer, storage capacity or memory size.
